Milan, the extremely negative record of Donnarumma
It’s hard to find who’s more guilty for the underwhelming start of AC Milan but at the same time it’s difficult to ignore the statistics. Gianluigi Donnarumma and the defenders are not performing.
Things are not going well at Casa Milan in this beginning of the season. The Rossoneri made their Serie A debut with an encouraging performance with Napoli, despite the final score, and then a fantastic match against Roma followed. However, Gennaro Gattuso’s squad has disappointed big ever since and yesterday’s match with Empoli marked the third consecutive draw in Serie A. Six points in five games is not a good start if this team really aims a place in the top four.
If we look at statistics the situation becomes even more worrying. AC Milan leak a lot in defense but it’s not an occurrence of only this season. In fact, with Gianluigi Donnarumma on the goal, the Rossoneri have conceded at least one goal in the last 16 consecutive games.
Nobody disputes the quality of Gigio but it’s hard the neglect the facts. On several occasions the 19 year old goalkeeper has been a protagonist in negative with his misjudged exits or bad positioning. The only time AC Milan managed to keep a clean sheet this season was against the semi-amateur Dudelange in Europa League with Pepe Rein in goal.
The four defenders are not helping Donnarumma at all. Romagnoli, Musacchio and Calabria have often been the main cause of the goals conceded in the last two seasons leaving Gigio vulnerable between the posts. If Champions League still remains a target at San Siro, Donnarumma and the four defender must raise their game quickly or risk repeating the last disappointing seasons.
